Meanwhile in New York, John Roberts, heir to a pharmaceutical company, and his friend Joel Rosenman were puzzling over the opposite question: where to profitably invest Roberts’ money. Lacking ideas of their own, they placed an ad in the New York Times that included the words, “Young people with unlimited capital are looking for interesting, legitimate investment opportunities and business proposals.” Needless to say, in the first days after the publication, woodstock 69 they were literally bombarded with offers from beggars looking for happiness and easy money. But, by some miracle, among that pile of crazy and charlatan ideas, Roberts and Rosenman caught sight of Lang and Kornfield’s proposal. “Why not?” – they decided. After the four young men met in February 1969, the idea of making a music studio evolved into an even grander and more coherent plan: organize a three-day rock festival for 50,000 people, and use the proceeds to build a large cultural center with recording studios and a retreat for musicians. At the time Michael, Artie, John and Joel had no idea of the difficulties they would run into or where the idea would lead to.
